Smart new entrance to Main reception for private apartments on the Salcombe estuary. High spec automatic sliding doors (inner & outer sets) replace old single-glazed glazed wooden door
Smart new entrance to Main reception for private apartments on the Salcombe estuary. High spec automatic sliding doors (inner & outer sets) replace old single-glazed glazed wooden door The residents' committee initially considered a design incorporating traditional soft seascape colours, but opted for a strong graphic design with a primary colour palette in a crisp modern take on ocean-going ships of bygone eras The original reception and solid wooden counter have been retained, but now with a new colour treatment these complement the ocean-going feel. The specially commissioned artworks are photographic images of boats & graphic distressed paintwork The hard-wearing leather furniture from the award-winning Oxo range designed by Nigel Coates provides flexible and dynamic seating that can be linked in different combinations With a restricted access-way between the outer and inner reception areas, it was important to create an interesting visual link with the internal area, which has become a highly appealing space for residents and visitors to linger The ship's 'gangway' theme with a specially commissioned stainless steel/ oak handrail is a response to the need to protect this narrow access point from being damaged by the high volume of traffic and luggage In the lift lobby a post-modernist Memphis standard lamp adds a witty note to the ship's liner theme. The venetian blind crisply obliterates an ugly sub-basement wall outside A structural metal pillar intrudes on the space but is wrapped with rope from nearby Salcombe chandlers to become a favourite quirky feature of the room
